Art Studio Rental Hours and Amenities

Lockable storage space i.e. locker (door to studio may be locked)
Art making materials i.e. paint, pencils
Stretchers, canvas, frames
Any kind of solvent/cleaner i.e. brush cleaner

General Art Studio Rules and Guidelines:

    1. Restricted Attendance
      Artists may use the Art Studio to produce works of art for commercial or private use. Visitors should be limited to those the artist has invited. Public may only enter the Art Studio when designated/allowed by currently occupying artist.

 

    1. Art Studio Reservations and Booking
      Easels and floor space are on a first-come, first-serve basis for each individual studio session. Use of the Art Studio is made by online reservation through direct contact with Imurj’s Gallery Program Manager at exhibit@imurj.com It is recommended that reservations be made in advance; walk-ins are only accepted on a first-come, first-served basis during pre-listed calendar offerings found on Imurj’s events web page. Reservations are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

 

    1. Studio Use Start Time & End Time
      Start Time:Artists should arrive prior to the reservation start time so as to not disrupt the studio session after it has begun. The studio will be open no more than 15 mins before the start time, unless in the case where one session continues over two different time blocks (Example: 10am-1:00pm registration, 1:00pm-5:00pm same pose/same study, separate registration).
      End Time:Artists must reserve enough time for clean-up. Artists must be ready to leave the studio by the reservation end time.
      The studio space, materials, and equipment are checked by staff at your sign-in and at your checkout to ensure you have everything you need and that the studio is in order upon your departure.

 

    1. Art Materials and Techniques
      Allowable: painting, drawing, clay, wood, fiber, metal, paper, mixed media.
      Not allowed: The Art Studio does not have a strong enough ventilation system to carry odors and toxic material outward. As such, Imurj does not permit materials and techniques that: 1) require high heat temperatures, exhaust, and ventilation 2) produce fumes or odors 3) are toxic, dangerous, or flammable and require special handling or protective gear and 4) discharge from aerosol sprays.
      Use of Oil Paints: The use of oil paint requires non-toxic and odorless solvent such as gamsol, baby oil, or essential oils. Harsher, more odorous and toxic solvents are not allowed.
      Procedures for Individual Artist Use and Artist Group Use will vary.

 

    1. Use of Amplified Sound
      Imurj offers a simple amplified sound system in the art studio to play music that is selected by studio users, with adjustable volume control. Audio/visual recording is allowed to be conducted during Individual Artist Studio use only, unless expressly permitted by all persons in the studio at the time of recording. Please note – because Imurj is a performance venue and may be recording from time to time, studio users must close the door if playing sound and must adhere to requests for noise control made by any Imurj staff at any and all times. As such, personal listening devices are highly recommended.

 

    1. Use of Amplified Sound

    1. Breaks
      There are no assigned breaks during Group Studio Use, except in the case of studio use with figure/portrait models and as arranged by the Studio Manager. Artists may break on an as needed, individual basis.

 

    1. Food and Beverage
      Eating food in the Art Studio is not recommended as general studio practice to prevent contamination. Beverages should be resealable. If food or beverages are consumed in the studio (such as a public reception), all spills and food remnants must be cleaned up immediately by the artist.

 

    1. Art Studio Door
      The Art Studio door can remain open or closed during artist use. The Art Studio door may be locked at the discretion of the artist when in use by a solo reservation. Artists reserving the Art Studio for one week or more will be given a key to the Art Studio door, which must be returned immediately at the end of their reservation. Please let Staff know to open the Studio if it is locked and should be open. Also see #9. Securing Valuables.

 

    1. Securing Valuables
      Work items/belongings: If working in the Art Studio via reservation for more than one day, artists may leave supplies and other valuables in the Art Studio overnight. Belongings may not be left at the facility past the duration of the reservation period. Works of art: Works of art may not be left at the facility, except in the instance of a studio use reserved over consecutive days (whether group or individual), in which case the artist may leave their work of art overnight. Works of art may not be left at the facility past the duration of the reservation period. All work left on premises and unattended is at the artist’s own risk.
      The Art Studio closet is unavailable for storage use by artists unless expressly permitted.

 

  1. Studio Assistants
    Studio Assistants are allowed for artists reserving the Art Studio, and are not provided by Imurj.

 

Figure and Portrait Models: Rules of Conduct

    1. The use of models is restricted to Group Studio Use only.

 

    1. Models may not be photographed or filmed; no exceptions.

 

    1. Artists may not verbally solicit figure models for outside or on-premise work. Models shall remain on a first-name basis only unless model prefers to remain anonymous. Artists may not request the contact information of the models. A studio bulletin board may be used for communication among studio members; approval is required to post to this board.

 

    1. Models shall use the Art Studio closet as a changing and storage area for personal belongings. The door shall remain locked when in use by models and when in session.

 

    1. Artists are not permitted to make physical contact with the models; no exceptions.

 

    1. Artists may not add additional props to the model arrangement unless permitted.

 

    1. There will be designated breaks designed for both model and artists. Artists may not request additional breaks of the models.

 

    1. Artists may have a group discussion to request a specific pose, however model poses will ultimately be to the discretion of the model and his/her physical and emotional comfort levels.

 

    1. Models may not be asked to continue poses past the designated time nor to begin earlier; no exceptions.

 

  1. The Art Studio door will remain closed (but not locked) during the entire duration of every portrait and figure model session. Studio Users must adhere to the door signage for respectful entry and exit procedures during model sessions.

Studio Clean-Up Procedures: Studio Users

    1. All items should be placed back at the artist’s working space if working in studio for more than one consecutive day; items may not be left at the sink or elsewhere within the studio.

 

    1. We are a recycling facility; waste must be placed in the appropriate receptacles.

 

    1. Paintbrushes must be wiped off prior to sink washing.

 

    1. Sink drains must be emptied and cleaned after each use.

 

    1. Floor and table spills must be cleaned up immediately.

 

    1. No pouring chemicals, adhesives, oils, or unused solids or liquids down the sink drain.

 

    1. Please use paint rags in place of paper towels whenever possible.

 

    1. Please put all items back in their proper storage area.

 

  1. Please report any damage or issues in a timely manner.*

 

*Damage resulting from improper use or negligence may result in a fine.

 

**If the Art Studio has not been properly cleaned up at the end of a rental period, i.e.
food or beverage is left behind, sink is clogged, there is unreported property damage, etc., Imurj reserves the right to charge a $35 cleanup fee to the rentee.**
